Abstract

While humour and laughter can coexist, they are distinct from one another aesthetically. Humour should be considered a stylistic device or an impulse to "realism" as in Rossini's play on the duet Pace e gioia sia con voi in the Baber of Seville. In addition, the humorous and tragic aspects go hand in hand and their reletionship in every work should be the subject of careful analysis. Humour as a form of energy is therefore analysed in the Barber of Seville by Rossini by focussing on the main characther Figaro, the identification of Figaro with the musician, and the cavatina Largo al factotum with its different sources and variations.
